WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MEASURE THE INTERNAL RESISTANCE OF A FORKLIFT BATTERY?

Author:BSLBATT    Publish Time: 2023-08-29

The internal resistance of a battery plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of voltage and determining the overall performance of the battery. Often referred to as the "gatekeeper," it acts as a barrier that restricts the delivery of voltage and influences the battery's runtime. This internal resistance is not a fixed value but is instead calculated based on several factors such as the battery's size, state of charge, age of the cells, temperature, internal chemistry, and current discharge. It is typically measured in milliohms, which provides a quantitative measure of the resistance.

Understanding the concept of internal resistance becomes particularly important when dealing with lift truck batteries. By comprehending the internal resistance of these batteries, one can make informed decisions when choosing between different power sources. This knowledge allows for a more efficient selection process, ensuring that the chosen battery is capable of meeting the specific requirements of the lift truck. Additionally, monitoring the internal resistance over time provides valuable insights into the battery's state of health and performance. By tracking this data, potential issues can be identified early on, allowing for timely maintenance or replacement, thus minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.

The internal resistance of a lift truck battery is influenced by various factors. The size of the battery, for instance, can impact the internal resistance, with larger batteries generally exhibiting lower resistance. The state of charge also plays a role, as a fully charged battery tends to have lower internal resistance compared to a partially charged one. The age of the cells within the battery can also affect the internal resistance, with older cells typically exhibiting higher resistance. Temperature is another crucial factor, as extreme temperatures can increase the internal resistance and reduce the overall performance of the battery. Lastly, the internal chemistry and current discharge of the battery contribute to its internal resistance. By considering all these parameters, one can gain a comprehensive understanding of the internal resistance of a lift truck battery and make informed decisions regarding its usage and maintenance.

HOW TO FIND VOLTAGE DROP IN A BATTERY

When electrical current is flowing through a circuit, the voltage output is always lower than the input - that difference is known as the voltagedrop.

Voltage drop is the product of current and resistance - so by understanding the amount of voltage drop, you can determine how energyefficient your battery.

The lower the internal resistance, the better the battery performance is. The higher internal resistance in a battery, the more the battery willheat up creating a voltage drop.
